The citizen who wishes to be well informed can hardly afford to neglect his or her education in these matters. But there are so many activities in this area that it is sometimes difficult to keep things straight. The following pages are intended to provide the general reader with a brief review of some of the high-speed weapons and vehicles that are either in existence or under development. It is hoped that the review will provide a useful background against which to view some of the news and discussions of the day. Mei 1940 was de tekst van dit werk geheel gereed. Hij moest natuurlijk blijven liggen, moest zelfs „onderduiken”, enige tijd later trouwens gevolgd door den schrijver.
Er moot tijdcns de oorlog nogal wat Napoleon-litcratuur verschenen zijn; deze is hier te lande in slechts onvoldoende mate bekend cn nauwelijks tc raadplegen. Enkele aanvullingcn vindt de lexer in de noten. De gebeurte-nissen van de afgelopen periode hebben den schrijver geen aanlciding ge-geven belangrijke wijzigingen aan te brengen, integendecl. Hij moge er echter wil van getuigen, hoezeer hijzichcrbij hcrlczing van zijn tekst be-wust van is geworden, dat het probleem van Napoleon toch nog steeds probleem voor hem is gebleven.
Dit boek zij opgedragen aan ene, van wie hij slechts den dichter kan nazeggen:
„Et, pour sa voix, lointainc, et calme, et grave, cllc a (/inflexion des voix chores qui sc sont tues.”
